Motorcycle theft is a growing phenomenon in our country. Viasat’s Annual Report shows that in Italy in 2022 – according to the latest State Police estimates – 31,138 motorcycles, scooters and mopeds went missing (16.59% more than the previous year). <\/strong>Practically 2,595 per month, more than 86 per day, and almost 4 every hour.<\/p>\n

Where they are stolen and how many are found<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Campania<\/strong> is confirmed as the most at-risk region with nearly 7,000 thefts per year (nearly +4% over the previous year). It is followed by Sicily<\/strong> with 5,569 (+45%) and Lazio<\/strong> with 5,210 (+7%). Just off the “podium” is Lombardy with 4,141 (+23.43%) stolen motorcycles. All Italian regions have rising numbers except Friuli Venezia Giulia, Basilicata, and Sardinia, which record declining percentages.<\/p>\n

Even on the recovery front, the news is not good. In fact, only a little over 12 thousand are recovered, 39 per cent of those stolen. <\/strong>Of the remaining 19 thousand motorcycles, traces are lost. The only Regions that exceed 50 per cent of finds are Liguria (the most virtuous with 65.23%), Emilia Romagna (63.56%) Tuscany (60.87%), Trentino Alto Adige (59%), and Veneto (53%).<\/p>\n

Satellite telematics as a crime-fighting measure<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Equipping the motorcycle with a satellite anti-theft device is certainly the safest way to protect the vehicle and, if stolen, to find it through geolocation. In this sense, Viasat’s SlimBox Moto<\/a>, equipped with GPS and GSM\/GPRS technologies, is a small satellite tracking system that enables a significantly higher find rate than the national figure. And it combines all the functionality and features proper to an advanced “black box” with the assistance services of the Viasat H24 Operations Center<\/a>.
