PLATE CHECK, A SUCCESS STORY

Story of a success. It is the best definition to describe a year of Plate Check, the initiative created by the ANIA Foundation in collaboration with the State Police to increase road safety. The official presentation of this initiative dates back to December 2018: on the occasion of the presentation conference that took place in Cagliari, we signed a protocol of understanding with the State Police. The initial idea was to contrast the phenomenon of insurance evasion by increasing the number and critical mass of roadside checks. To achieve the goal, the contribution of new technologies was necessary; Street Controls -devices capable of reading up to 100 plates per second, sharing real time information on insurance coverage and failure in vehicle overhaul- have been adopted. 142 of them have been purchased and distributed to State Police departments, prioritising 29 critical provinces, identified by Ivass (National Insurance Organisation) as those with the highest accident rate. The balance of the first year of activity is absolutely positive: thanks these new equipment, it has been possible to check more than 6 million vehicles. Of these, over 110 thousand failed to comply with insurance obligations and over 150 thousand with mechanical overhaul. The ANIA Foundation (National Insurance Companies Organisation) has invested in this project because it represents the best way to test the validity of new road service and insurance technologies. This was also the case for the introduction and diffusion of Black Boxes, tested in pilot projects by ANIA Foundation ; they have become a useful tool for the insurance sector. We hope to be equally successful in the future.
